"P-Rade and other Princeton fun"
06/01/2002 Entry

Reu01-diane-melissa-eszter-crops (39k image) Reunions are a huge event at Princeton, apparently 16,000 people (alums and their friends and family) descended on campus this weekend. The school colors are orange and black, and there seems to be a neverending competition as to who can make the most of those colors. (I'm surprised some influential Princetonians in the fashion industry - as there must be some - haven't made it a more mainstream fashion statement. Maybe people are only willing to bend so far... I did say orange.)
In the morning, I went to a panel on Internet and e-commerce featuring Meg Whitman (CEO of eBay) and some other Internet industry alums. I didn't find the discussion particularly illuminating. The speakers shared a few factoids that were interesting, but that was about it. (Let's see.. did you know that in 1998 Beanie Babies made up 8% of all eBay sales.. and that in 2002 used cars sales are one of the greatest hits?)
In the afternoon, everyone lined up for the P-rade which is a fun activity, and as I said, more orange than you can imagine. It's a very interesting demographic showcasing of Princeton throughout the last century.
The fireworks wrap up the weekend. I added an extra twist this year: a friend and I headed out to the lake with a canoe and watched it from the water. We were the only ones out there (except for the fire marshalls), it was as though we got our own personalized fireworks show. That was very cool.

Blogs I Visit

The small print

A few words on what I will and will not post on this blog (taken from my E-LIST entry of January 2, 2002). I have nothing against posting commercial sites as long as they come highly recommended. In fact, I'm quite interested in improving informed consumer choice so I'm very curious to hear about good experiences with online retailers. What I will refrain from posting are sites that require plug-ins or programs that are painful to deal with. Example: I will not post anything that only works with RealOne/RealPlayer as that program is intrusive and annoying beyond belief and I am not willing to reinstall it on my machine (it was hard enough to get rid of it completely in the first place) nor do I want to encourage others to have it. If your site has audio content, please make it available in multiple formats or choose one that can be run on multiple players (e.g. .avi).
