"Bloggies 2003"
01/08/2003 Entry

An E-LIST oldtimer (who I don't think reads my blog but hears about it enough) just sent me information about the Bloggies which are "publicly chosen awards given to weblog writers and those related to weblogs in 30 categories".

As usual, I was intrigued by the existing categories. After all, how you slice things very much influences how we see them, evaluate them and think about them.

My latest related activity has been critiquing the American Sociological Association's (and by association the Sociologists for Women in Society's) list of "areas of specialization" which seem quite outdated. For example, how many sociologists would say their area is "microcomputing" whereas "communication and information technologies" is not an available option.

But let's return to the Bloggies. I think the most intriguing for me was to see the following category:
Best European or African Weblog
The other geographically based categories are the following:
Best Australian or New Zealand Weblog
Best Asian Weblog
Best Latin American Weblog
Best Canadian Weblog
Best American Weblog

I find it fascinating that for some reason the continents of Europe and Africa were merged for the purposes of the Bloggies. Are there so few on those two continents (and so many in Australia and New Zealand)? Are they qualitatively so similar? Are the others qualitatively so different? I can't quite figure out what went into that classification.

I don't think I fully understand the category Best Non-Weblog Content of a Weblog Site but perhaps I haven't picked up all blog nuances just yet (or more likely, definitions of what counts as a Weblog and what is non-Weblog content vary widely).

I'll be most curious to see the lists for Best-Kept-Secret Weblog, Best New Weblog, Lifetime Achievement and Weblog of the Year.

That sure is a start. It would be nice if they were also organized according to language. Few people realize how poorly blogging environments handle non-ascii text.

Blogs I Visit

The small print

A few words on what I will and will not post on this blog (taken from my E-LIST entry of January 2, 2002). I have nothing against posting commercial sites as long as they come highly recommended. In fact, I'm quite interested in improving informed consumer choice so I'm very curious to hear about good experiences with online retailers. What I will refrain from posting are sites that require plug-ins or programs that are painful to deal with. Example: I will not post anything that only works with RealOne/RealPlayer as that program is intrusive and annoying beyond belief and I am not willing to reinstall it on my machine (it was hard enough to get rid of it completely in the first place) nor do I want to encourage others to have it. If your site has audio content, please make it available in multiple formats or choose one that can be run on multiple players (e.g. .avi).
