"Cool Google features"
01/22/2003 Entry

There are a couple of very cool and convenient features Google offers.. but unfortunately only for Win & IE users. I'm surprised there hasn't been an uprising in other communities to get these features for other setups.

I have been using the Google Toolbar for quite a while. If you look at screen captures of other entries on this blog you will notice the little box in the upper right section of the browser with Google and a little search area. It's super convenient to type queries in the box regardless of what Web page you happen to be browsing.

I just noticed another cool Google search feature: Google Browser Buttons. First I thought these were simply links to the Google homepage (and other Google pages) which is not very helpful if you are already using the Google Toolbar. But then I noticed that the Google Search button is more than that. If you add it to your browser Links bar then you can highlight any phrase on the Web page you are browsing, click on the Google Search button in the Links bar and you will be taken to the Google results page for the highlighted phrase. Pretty cool.

So I guess that would have to be a strike against future migration over to Macs.. unless Google decides to extend the feature to other OSs and browsers.

fascinating, but of limited use w/the google toolbar - seems if you highlight some word/text on a webpage, and drag it to the search window in the toolbar, you get the same results. hmm... in the same vein, you can also drag links to the url window (msie) if clicking 'em isn't your thing.

One of my friends now swears by AvantBrowser, formerly known as IE Opera -- an IE skin that has all sorts of nifty functions, including a built-in google bar.

Blogs I Visit

The small print

A few words on what I will and will not post on this blog (taken from my E-LIST entry of January 2, 2002). I have nothing against posting commercial sites as long as they come highly recommended. In fact, I'm quite interested in improving informed consumer choice so I'm very curious to hear about good experiences with online retailers. What I will refrain from posting are sites that require plug-ins or programs that are painful to deal with. Example: I will not post anything that only works with RealOne/RealPlayer as that program is intrusive and annoying beyond belief and I am not willing to reinstall it on my machine (it was hard enough to get rid of it completely in the first place) nor do I want to encourage others to have it. If your site has audio content, please make it available in multiple formats or choose one that can be run on multiple players (e.g. .avi).
