"NPM in TANF"
02/04/2003 Entry

If the acronym in the title is obscure enough, are you more likely to read the post?

In any case, NPM in TANF stands for No Promotion of Marriage in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program. Some academics and activists have put together a Web site opposing the proposed federal mandate that would "order states to promote marriage within their welfare programs as a solution to poverty".

The site offers a list of reasons why this proposal is potentially problematic on numerous levels. The list seems quite convincing.

I have some friends who work on the Fragile Families and Child Well Being study who may be able to tell me more about all this. I don't know enough about the topic to understand the details. For one thing, what does it mean "to order states to promote marriage"?

Hi, Eszter--

At least in the version the House passed last year, marriage promotion in TANF would allow the states to redirect about $1.6 billion of TANF money over the next five years toward marriage promotion activities--which include things like pro-marriage advertising campaigns and high school education programs promoting marriage. [Now THAT's a MUCH better use of the money than, say, child care or health care, wouldn't you say?!]

Sorry to see that we didn't get you here in Urbana, but glad that you'll be in the general vicinity...

Blogs I Visit

The small print

A few words on what I will and will not post on this blog (taken from my E-LIST entry of January 2, 2002). I have nothing against posting commercial sites as long as they come highly recommended. In fact, I'm quite interested in improving informed consumer choice so I'm very curious to hear about good experiences with online retailers. What I will refrain from posting are sites that require plug-ins or programs that are painful to deal with. Example: I will not post anything that only works with RealOne/RealPlayer as that program is intrusive and annoying beyond belief and I am not willing to reinstall it on my machine (it was hard enough to get rid of it completely in the first place) nor do I want to encourage others to have it. If your site has audio content, please make it available in multiple formats or choose one that can be run on multiple players (e.g. .avi).
