"Innovative ways of teaching"
02/11/2003 Entry
Although this may not be obvious to students, many professors are not out to make life miserable for their pupils, rather, they are truly interested in contributing to their learning process. Sociological theory is one of those topics that's especially hard to pitch to 18-20 year olds (Kieran has commented on this before and he should know since he actually teaches theory courses). So it's nice when people come up with innovative ways of presenting information.
Check out David Gauntlett's Theory Trading Cards. The little cards are quite informative. Of course, it's a bit hard for me to tell whether they'd be meaningful as a first read as I've been exposed to many of these people's works before. Nonetheless, it's a very imaginative approach to adding a fun *gasp* yet useful component to theory learning. A new addition seems to be the Lego Theorists corner. Check out Anthony Giddens in his study at LSE. Each piece sold separately? Nope, looks like two engaged students are included in the set. What a bargain.

I showed the theory trading card site to another TA today (she teaches the COM theory class) - that's an exercise that would transfer incredibly well to any class and any subject - and really any grade level. Thanks for this great idea. Another site that is useful for students (especially in journalism, but also for any writing related to current events: http://www.journaliststoolbox.com/.)
