"More snow"
02/17/2003 Entry

I guess this has become a blog about the weather.. it's hard to ignore all the snow. I found the following weather notice on the MyWay homepage amusing:

mywayweather: light snow

I realize the "light snow" probably refers to the amount expected to fall today, but it's funny to see when there's more snow outside than I can remember.. for this area anyway. I see a good chunk of the parking lot from my apartment and I can tell that the one car that attempted to leave this morning got stuck halfway outside of its slot and is just stranded there blinking. The snowplows are getting stuck as well. "Light snow" is not what comes to mind when I look at this scene.

I'm reminded of the 1996 winter when I was going to college in Massachusetts. I had to be back the first day of school as part of the residential staff making my visit to Geneva shorter than I would have preferred. I asked a friend to pick me up at the airport in Boston if the weather was okay. He picked me up regardless. The weather was far from okay. The Greyhound buses had stopped on the side of the highway things had gotten so bad (I didn't think anything would ever stop those buses). There was more ice than anything else and we couldn't see more than a few feet ahead. There were no lights of other cars to guide us because all other drivers had the good judgement to stay off of the highway. To top it off, the front of the car started smoking. Somehow - I honestly don't know how - we made it all the way to Northampton, but that was not a pleasant experience. Nice of my friend to come and get me though.

In any case, point is that I won't be attempting to move my car today and I hope others make that call as well.

Blogs I Visit

The small print

A few words on what I will and will not post on this blog (taken from my E-LIST entry of January 2, 2002). I have nothing against posting commercial sites as long as they come highly recommended. In fact, I'm quite interested in improving informed consumer choice so I'm very curious to hear about good experiences with online retailers. What I will refrain from posting are sites that require plug-ins or programs that are painful to deal with. Example: I will not post anything that only works with RealOne/RealPlayer as that program is intrusive and annoying beyond belief and I am not willing to reinstall it on my machine (it was hard enough to get rid of it completely in the first place) nor do I want to encourage others to have it. If your site has audio content, please make it available in multiple formats or choose one that can be run on multiple players (e.g. .avi).
