"Remembering"
09/11/2003 Entry
I never fully understood what people meant when they used to say: I will always remember where I was when I heard about the Kennedy assassination. The events on 9/11 two years ago changed this for my generation. Unfortunately, now I understand what people meant when they said they would never forget where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news as I'm certain I will always remember where I was when I found out about the plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center and where I ended up watching both towers collapse. The images are as unforgettable as they are incomprehensible.

Different such memorable days for different people. My sister and I have recollections of 22 November 1963, for my younger brother, no such memory. For people a few years younger, they'll remember 28 January 1986, particularly if they were schoolkids at the time. (I'm hard pressed to recall precisely what day it was in August of 1991 that the Communist coup attempt in Russia started, and it was Christmas Day of that year that the Soviet Union went out of business. Sometimes the event of the day is memorable and pivotal, sometimes it's not.)
There are likely to be other such days in the future, some of which we will not live to see, and which generations to come will perceive differently.

My first such experience was on Jan. 28, 1986, when the Challenger exploded before our eyes. At that time, and until 9/11, I too felt that must have been how my parents felt when President Kennedy was assassinated. I will always remember that day, but in a way it was replaced by 9/11. I was saddened and surprised by Challenger explosion, but it was a horrible accident. The Kennedy assassination and 9/11 were perpretrated by evil people and that makes it all the more disturbing and shocking.
