"Name that product"
01/14/2004 Entry

[See this entry - including comments - at Crooked Timber.]

Sometimes I wonder how companies come up with names for their products. I just noticed that the shower knob in my bathroom is called Monitor. (I just moved so most things at my place are new to me.) I guess that may seem innocent enough, but not after having just watched this episode of The Practice. In it, one of the characters finds out that her superintendent has been making video tapes of her in the shower (using a hidden camera in the vent) and has been posting these online. As if this wasn’t bad enough, we find out that there is nothing illegal about such videotaping as potentially relevant laws only apply to audio recordings. So it’s not that I’m overly paranoid, but I would’ve probably preferred a name with less meaning on my shower knob (except who runs around thinking about shower knob name preferences?!;).

For some reason this recalls to mind that the presentation sword given to the Captain of the Monitor (after the Civil War) was just returned to the Naval Academy. It had been stolen in 1931, and was just recovered. The juxtaposition of sharp instruments and showers make me think of Psycho. So much for stream of consciousness.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. As for "stream of consciousness", perfect in a post related to showers.:-)

first of all, i don't think you're at all paranoid - you've got to wonder why on earth a shower head would be called "the monitor"...?!?! creepy.

second of all - hey Eszter! i am wondering if you remember me - I was at Smith when you were a senior, and I was dating Monica Hamburgh. i found your blog randomly through misbehaving.net and thought "hey, cool - another smith alum blogger!" which prompted my very next question - "i wonder if there are other smith bloggers?" if you know of any, please let me know!! i'll keep checking this thread and/or shoot me an email.

hope you are well! take care!

Blogs I Visit

The small print

A few words on what I will and will not post on this blog (taken from my E-LIST entry of January 2, 2002). I have nothing against posting commercial sites as long as they come highly recommended. In fact, I'm quite interested in improving informed consumer choice so I'm very curious to hear about good experiences with online retailers. What I will refrain from posting are sites that require plug-ins or programs that are painful to deal with. Example: I will not post anything that only works with RealOne/RealPlayer as that program is intrusive and annoying beyond belief and I am not willing to reinstall it on my machine (it was hard enough to get rid of it completely in the first place) nor do I want to encourage others to have it. If your site has audio content, please make it available in multiple formats or choose one that can be run on multiple players (e.g. .avi).
