Voting for Romanians - A Challenge?

Date: 10/21/2010

Time: 7:30

We join other groups around the world in a project meant to improve the voting system for Romanians leaving abroad, initiated by Global Romanian Students & Professionals Society. We'll discuss the electoral system in Romania with Professor Grigore Pop-Eleches of the Politics Department and debate on the potential effectiveness of implementing electronic voting among Romanians leaving abroad, following the lead of other democracies. The debate will take place in 28 McCosh Hall, right next to Princeton University Chapel. Eastern-European flavored deserts and snacks provided by Olives!

Prior to the debate, at 6 pm, join us for dinner in Butler College with Prof. Pop-Eleches.

The New El Dorado (2004, Romanian & Hungarian) is an independent documentary which shows the truth about Rosia Montana, a magnificent Romanian village with a two thousand year history, threatened with destruction by a Canadian company in order to make way for Europe's largest open cast gold mine. Presentation by students & refreshments @ 7 pm, followed by film screening @ 7:30 pm. Graduate students Theodor Brasoveanu and Elie Teichman will share more general remarks on the challenges and rewards of working in the non-profit sector in Romania.

Documentary screening with director Andrei Dascalescu

Date: 3/6/2010

Time: 7:30

We welcome you to a screening of the documentary "Constantin and Elena" (Romania & Spain, 2009) after its US premiere at the MoMA's Documentary Fortnight, followed by a Q&A session with the director Andrei Dascalescu - a collaborator of Francis Ford Coppola on "Youth without Youth."

Synopsis: A bittersweet love story. Where "sweet" is the love (after 55 years of marriage), "bitter" is the lack of time left for the "sweet" (the old age), and "story" is the everyday life. A film about the ancestral, pure way of living and loving. A cinematic, observational, sometimes voyeuristic look at a way of life and a life itself, both, almost extinct.

The screening will take place in McCormick 101 (PU Art Museum) this Saturday March 6 at 7:30pm, followed by Q&A with the director: http://www.princeton.edu/~pumap/buildings/15.html

At 6 pm, join us for dinner in Butler College with the young film director who produced a little masterpiece inspired by his grandparents.

Presented by the PU Romanian Students Association in collaboration with Subtitles, USG, Davis International Center, the Anthropology Department, the Committee on Film Studies and Butler College.
